Drawing for Learning: Using drawing as a learning tool is proven to aid memory as the semantic, kinetic and visual parts of the brain are activated at the same time (Terada, 2019). This allows for connections to be made across neural pathways. Gain drawing confidence (no matter your current ability) while learning about the underlying thinking skills that are developed during the drawing process (Hetland et al 2013).
Music and Maths: One of South Africa’s biggest educational challenge is to raise the standard of Mathematics instruction. This workshop focuses on developing multiple calculation strategies while having fun with counting beats. Make music, use bottle tops to promote ‘grouping’ of numbers and learn how to encourage ‘number sence’. Research based games that are aimed at developing spatial reasoning skills are also included (Wheatley’s quick draw and the Pentomino challenge).
Light-boxes: Cross-curricular teaching facilitated through the construction of a light-box. In this workshop teachers get to, ‘experience the learning for themselves’ (Meiring, 2014) while gaining adaptive expertise. Participants will gain knowledge and skills while developing problem-solving and communication skills.
Exploring colour: Promotion of observational and language skills through looking and describing tonal variation in water-colour paint. This workshop promotes an understanding of the properties of water (density, phases and the water-cycle) through a discovery learning process with paint. Emphasis is thus, placed on primary/secondary colour mixing, adjectives and science experiments (evaporation, water and wax)
Play-dough: Learning through the senses, following a recipe, vocabulary development, indigenous plants and photosynthesis. 3D and 2D shapes, transformations and map work skills. Evidence based discussion “The 8 Studio Habits of Mind” (Hetland et al., 2013) focusing on the development of adaptive expertise.
